Early Spring in Finnish Taiga

In March and early April most of the land areas are still covered with ice and snow. The days are  already long, however, and normal spring weather is bright and sunny. This is the time of year when Owls are displaying and it is possible to hear several species calling on one evening excursion. Also this can be a spectacular time to watch Great Grey- and Hawk Owls hunting out in the open fields! If there are Snowy Owls wintering, they should still be around.

This is also a very good time to see all the Grouse species since they are lekking already. Woodpeckers are drumming and Crossbills are singing as well. At this time of year we usually find also one of the most elusive forest species, Pine Grosbeak fairly easily!

During the bright nights it is possible to see the northern lights- Aurora borealis! For the photographers March and April offer good light conditions because there is still a lot of snow.
